Conveniently located at the gateway to the splendid Loire Valley 1.5 hours from Paris and famous for its pleasant climate, Angers is a large, modern town which regularly tops the lists of best places to live in France.

The city was ranked number one for quality of life in 2019 by the L’Express magazine. As revealed by the 2020 report from the “Observatoire des Villes Vertes”, it is also officially recognised as the greenest town in France, with almost 100m² of green spaces per resident.

Renowned for its many historical sites and fine gastronomy, Angers has rich, vibrant cultural scene: cinemas, theatres, concert venues, art galleries, three big music, drama and movie festivals… Angers is also one of the most sports-focused towns in France and home to the SCO premier league football team.

With its young population (48% are under 30) and ambitious urban schemes, Angers is surprisingly well-balanced. With 42,000 students, Angers is the fifth biggest student town in France in terms of the ratio of students to the general population.

Angers is also particularly open to the world: it was chosen by China to host a Confucius Institute and it has the largest English-language library in western France. It has been building close social and business relationships with foreign towns since the mid-sixties. Today Angers has 8 sister cities around the world.

University of Angers

Historical background

The University of Angers is the fifth oldest university in France. It was founded in 1364 by King Charles V and abolished during the French Revolution. However Angers remained an important focus of intellectual and academic activity. The modern university was established in the 1970s. In 2021, the University of Angers will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its refoundation.

Academic success

The University of Angers is dedicated to helping its 24,500 students achieve academic success and find employment.

UA has created a full package of measures to guide them during their first steps in higher education and throughout their studies: tutoring programmes, small-group work, continuous assessment… The one-stop InfoCampus helpdesk provides information and advice on all extra-curricular aspects such as transport, accommodation, health, insurance, financial aid, sports, cultural activities, etc.

There are many opportunities for work experience and internships plus a careers and employability service.

As a result, UA has had the highest graduation rate in France for 3-year bachelor’s degree students for several years now, and approximately 90% of UA graduates are in work 30 months after graduation.

UA offers a wide range of degrees across many areas including science, technology, humanities, business, law, engineering, health, arts, literature and languages, tourism, hospitality management...

Research excellence

Research at the University of Angers is innovative and characterised by cross-disciplinary cooperation and close links with education and society.

UA employs over 800 researchers and 500 PhD students (40% of whom are international doctoral students). It has a network of 25 research units covering a variety of fields, the major ones being Plant and Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences, Medical Sciences, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences.

UA owns 65 active patent families and 6 start-up companies were created as a direct result of lab activities.

International focus

With 12% of international students and 129 nationalities, as well as over 400 international partners across the globe, the University of Angers has a definite international dimension. Its student mentoring programme helps promote intercultural awareness and contributes to the integration of international students arriving at UA. In 2019, the University of Angers entered the Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the Shanghai ranking.

A welcoming community

The University of Angers is a human-scale university with a quality infrastructure and a living environment that promote student success. Of all university libraries in France, UA’s are among the ones with the most extensive opening hours, including on Sundays.
UA also offers a large number of various cultural activities: exhibitions, concerts, university performing arts festival… 

UA has 3 dining halls serving quality food, a healthcare centre and a sports centre with a choice of 55 art and sports activities.

Summer Schools in Angers

For the past 10 years, the University of Angers has given international students the opportunity to enrich their academic experience in a stimulating and relaxed environment while discovering French culture and the Anjou region.

The one or two-week programmes combine lectures, workshops, site visits, leisure activities with the possibility of developing your network… and creating great memories.

Courses are taught in English by renowned international researchers and are open to participants from all over the world.

In 2019, 150 students from around 30 different countries took part in our summer schools.
