    Prehistory and antiquity

    It is the discovery of a small flint tool which shows the oldest evidence of human occupation in Angers. We are then at the lower Paleolithic.

    The beginnings of the ancient Celtic people of the Andes, who gave his name to the city , settled north of the Loire , develops from the first century BC. J. -C an important oppidum on the site of Angers. Small town of artisans , the city then takes a more residential character with its Gallo-Roman villas and baths. The area may then compete with that of Lutetia. The City shall have a first chamber to 275-350 .

     

    Middle Age

    With the arrival of Christianity, between Angers in the medieval era . The early days of Christianity were marked by the creation of a new cemetery and the growth of the monastic life. From the year 850, Angers, located in a border area, is threatened by the Bretons and Normans . In vain , the Angers Treaty, trying to protect the city against invasion. Charles the Bald decides to create a broad border work formed the territories of Anjou, Touraine and Maine.

    To 929 is Fulk of Anjou , said Roux , who took the title Count and founded the first dynasty of the counts of Anjou. The quiet is then momentarily restored.

    In the twelfth century , Henry II ruled the Angevin empire that stretched from Scotland to the Pyrenees. The Château d' Angers is the seat of the dynasty and the king's court . During the medieval period, the radiation Angers has expanded considerably . Schools of Law, Medicine and Theology , famous throughout Europe are organized in Universities.

     

    Renaissance

    Renaissance Anjou opens with the personality of King René , the last of the Princes of Anjou to conquer. Sovereignty marks a prosperous period for Angers. Spurred on by this enlightened prince and lover of art , the city became an important cultural , intellectual and political . Indeed, after difficult years marked by plague and the Hundred Years War , Angers experiencing a new age of literary , artistic and scientific gold with Rabelais, Joachim du Bellay, Janequin , Ambroise Paré .... It is the fifth largest city in France which installs a printer.

     

    Old Regime and Revolution

    During the first half of the seventeenth century , a wave of anger is brewing . Famines, epidemics and growing tax burden Angevins to revolt, it is called Anjou Fronde . To punish dissenters , the privilege of free election of the city council is deleted. This is the guardianship .

    The Revolution saw the arrival of the dismantling of the former royal provinces. Members are requested provinces to establish a network of new departments . Thus was born the department of Mayenne -et-Loire (future Maine-et- Loire) in 1790.

     

    Nineteenth to the present day

    In the nineteenth century , Angers suffered collateral damage of the great Parisian Haussmann led transformations . Haussmann style influences new buildings that stand in the 1870s , many arteries are pierced walls and shot. The city is coquettish, is adorned with statues and a new theater , a real palace Arts .

    Later, the construction of the Hotel Post, Hotel Continental , or the Blue House , will give Angers Art Deco accents .

    From June 1940, Angers is occupied and became the seat of a regional headquarters. In 1941, Victor Chatenay creates the first Angevin resistance movement to be known as " Honneur et Patrie ." The latter became mayor of Angers after the war. He then began a campaign of modernization and industrialization that brings new life to the city.

    These are today's technologies and plant industry that gave rise Angers his best with the presence of the research laboratories of the CNRS and INRA .
